The respective propellants are pumped forwards, not directly, as that would interfere with the incoming fuel, but outwards in a forward facing cone. The braking effect works well enough. Of course it takes a long time to slow down and in the final stages some of the incoming gas is cooled and captured, and stored on board. The increase in mass helps the deceleration, and of course this captured hydrogen is the first fuel burned on the next acceleration”.
